Four Options to Hire Us for Live Music
Solo/Duo For all occasions, from quiet dinner music through houserockers.		Band Now here's the way to party! A live blues band appeals to all ages.
Solo As a solo, Hal does vocals backed by a computer-assisted synthesizer. The system is also capable of playing CDs and computer music files for special occasions, such as ethnic events.	Duo As a duo, Hal does vocals and saxes with a keyboard player taking over the synthesizer. This provides a bigger sound, which is especially good for events where you want to get them up and dancing.	Band The four-piece band performs blues, rock and roll from the 50's and 60's, and a bit of all sorts of styles. Hal's vocals and sax are backed by guitar, bass, and drums. This is party time music, not for quiet dinners.	Extras For a really big show, a four-piece band might not be enough. More performers can be added to the basic blues band. A second guitar, another sax, or even some brasses can fill out the sound.

How Much Does It Cost?

Probably less than you think, but the answer is "it depends."

• Who: Do you want solo, duo, 4-piece, extras?
• What: Do we need to set up our own sound system? What kind of music do you want? Are there any special event requirements, such as special music or clothing?
• When: Is the event during a peak demand time? New Year's Eve is a prime time and calls for a premium price. A day with no particular demand is the lowest cost.
• Where: Home base is Westborough, Mass. Travel to a distant venue requires a surcharge to cover transportation expenses.

What do I need to provide?

We need the following:

• Space: We need about 6 feet square for a solo, 8 feet square for a duo, 12 feet square for the band, and more if there are additional pieces.
• Power: We need a 110 volt, 30 amp, three-prong grounded power socket within 10 feet of the performing space. We may be able to use a 20-amp socket for smaller venues.
• Lighting: The performing space must have suitable lighting. We do not provide lighting equipment.
• Sound System: Our sound system provides up to 140 watts, suitable for most indoor events and for small outdoor events. If you need a larger sound system, it must include the following:
  • Solo: two 1/4" inputs for the synthesizer and two microphones.
  • Duo: two 1/4" inputs for the synthesizer and four microphones.
  • Band: six microphones.
  • Extras: an additional microphone for each added performer.
• Setup and Security: We need time and access for setup with appropriate security. We also need a place to park. In unusual cases, you may have to provide some people to help with the loadout or watch over equipment:
  • Parking and Loading: We need a suitable loading zone and parking spaces. If you do not provide free parking, tell us the required fees before we set the price for the performance.
  • Access Time: We need access to the performance space at least 45 minutes before the performance (for setup) and for 45 minutes after the performance (for breakdown).
  • Unloading and Loading: The equipment is transported on a wheeled cart from the vehicle loading zone to the performance space. Several trips may be needed. If there are any intervening stairs or other barriers that might interfere with this movement, you need to provide any assistance required by these obstacles.
  • Security: You must provide appropriate security, giving a reasonable degree of protection to vehicles in the loading zone and parking area, to equipment in the performance space or in transit, and to the performers. If the loading zone is not adjacent to the performance space, you must provide security for the both the unattended vehicle and the equipment in the performance space during transportation and setup.
  If this seems overly specific, let me tell you about going to a place where there was no loading zone, the parking area was three blocks away (through a "bad" neighborhood), the parking fees totaled $80 for the night, the performance space was at the top of two flights of narrow, twisting stairs, and the management just "couldn't spare anybody" to help with all this.

  We won't do that again.

  Do you perform for free at charity events?

  If it's a charitable cause that I support (seniors, medical research, etc.), I may decide to donate my time and expenses as a solo. Each performance costs me money in travel, instrument and equipment costs, and so on. As a result, I occasionally volunteer as a solo and less often have a volunteer keyboard player for a duo. For the full band, I may volunteer my personal time and expenses, but I have to pay the backup musicians.
